The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of tension-free inguinal herniorrhaphy using marlex mesh in the in the adult-type inguinal hernia. From January 1992 to December 1993, 79 patients with inguinal hernia were operated in our
department of surgery, Korea University Anam. Hospital, According to the operation type, the patients were grouped as conventional surgery group, 47 cases and tension-gree surgery group, 32 cases. There were 70 men and 9 women, whose mean age was
50.4
years (range, 17~85 years). The important parameters to be compared were the duration of operative procedure, period of hospital stay, morbidity, intensity and duration of postoperative wound pain and recurrence rate. In comparison between two
oeprative
methods, duration of operation andpostoperative pain showed no significant statistical differences. The patients wo underwent tension-free surgery had shorter hospital staying lesser postoperative wound pain, fewer complications and early return
to
previous job compared to conventional surgery group.
We conclude that the tension-free heniorrhaphy wsing Marlex-mesh is superior operative procedure for adult-type inguinal hernia compared to the conventional Bassini procedure.
